India Takes a Stand Against Child Marriage, Promotes Gender Equality

India has made significant strides in recent years towards eliminating child marriage. This harmful practice, which denies children their basic rights and exposes them to a myriad of risks, is slowly but steadily becoming a thing of the past in our country.

One of the key factors driving this positive change is increased awareness about the negative impact of child marriage on young boys and girls. People are starting to understand that marrying off children at a young age not only deprives them of their childhood but also subjects them to physical, emotional, and social hardships.

Efforts by the government and various non-profit organizations to educate communities about the legal implications of child marriage have also played a crucial role in reducing its prevalence. Laws prohibiting child marriage and promoting the education and empowerment of young girls have been instrumental in creating a more child-friendly environment in India.

Moreover, grassroots movements led by local activists and community leaders have further contributed to the decline of child marriage in the country. By challenging harmful social norms and advocating for the rights of children, these individuals are driving positive change at the grassroots level.

It is important to recognize that the fight against child marriage is far from over. Despite the progress made, there are still many challenges to overcome, including widespread poverty, lack of access to education, and deeply entrenched patriarchal attitudes.

To build on the momentum gained so far, it is crucial for all stakeholders – from government officials to community members – to work together towards creating a society where child marriage is seen as a relic of the past. By continuing to raise awareness, enforce existing laws, and empower young girls and boys, we can ensure a future where every child in India is free to grow, learn, and thrive without the shadow of child marriage looming over their lives. Let us join hands and strive towards a child marriage-free India.

In 2013, I posted a YouTube video decrying child marriage showcasing her story and her experience in being forced into marriage contracts, which quickly went viral and prompted coverage of Yemen’s continued practice of child marriage. She managed to influence the comprehensive national dialogue conference in Yemen to pass and apply a law of criminalizing the marriage of minors under the age of 18 , and that is after launching her first video to rally the international media to denounce the marriage of minors. Below are highlights of her main not limited to her achievement during the awareness campaign she held throughout herlife:
